LASIK Correction for Astigmatism
One of the most common visual conditions for which LASIK correction is indicated is astigmatism. Astigmatism is a condition that can occur either by itself or in conjunction with myopia or hyperopia. It is characterized by blurred or distorted vision at both distant and near ranges. Persons suffering from astigmatism may also experience headaches and/or eyestrain.
Causes of astigmatism treatable by LASIK correction
In a normal eye, the curvature of the cornea resembles that of the surface of a ball such as a baseball, but in an
astigmatic cornea is oblong, more like the surface of a football. Therefore, the surface of an astigmatic eye has two curves, one steep and one flat. The result of this is that light entering the eye converges at multiple points rather than at a single location as it would do in a normal cornea. Consequently, the eye transmits conflicting signals to the brain, creating the vision to be blurred or distorted.
Astigmatism is usually inherited from one’s parents; however it can also be the result of injury to the eye or as a byproduct of ocular disease.
LASIK correction is a viable treatment for astigmatism
Visual distortion as a result of astigmatism can be treated with corrective lenses, but many patients opt for the more permanent solution of LASIK correction. During the procedure, the abnormally steep curve of the astigmatic cornea is flattened, thereby decreasing the cornea’s oblong shape and creating a more spherical shape.
LASIK correction for astigmatism involves laser pulses being delivered precisely to the corneal tissue in the axis of the steeper curve. When the angle of the curve is decreased, the overall spherical shape of the cornea is increased, and the eye is then able to focus light rays more efficiently. The end result is crisper, clearer vision.
For patients with astigmatism, LASIK correction is the only treatment that actually addresses the source of the problem, rather than simply applying a band-aid solution to the symptoms. If you suffer from astigmatism and are tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses, LASIK correction may be a good solution for you. Talk to your ophthalmologist about whether the procedure may be right for you.
